Dr. Roger K. Lau, DDS earned his DDS at the UCLA School of Dentistry, completed dual oral and maxillofacial surgery internships at Montefiore Medical Center and Mount Sinai Hospital, and finished a four-year residency at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh including a chief resident year.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of twelve dental specialties recognized by the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards. Dr. Lau is the only specialist on our team. Everyone else is a general dentist.

The standard route for a dental implant splits the work across two offices. A surgeon places the post. Months later, a restorative dentist puts a crown on it. When those two clinicians are not planning together, the implant sometimes ends up in a position that makes the restoration a compromise. Bone Grafting and Sinus Lifts

Bone loss is the usual obstacle to implant treatment, and it is usually solvable. Grafting rebuilds volume at a site that has resorbed. A sinus lift raises the sinus floor in the upper back jaw to create height for an implant. Ridge preservation, placed into the socket at the time of extraction, limits collapse before you have decided on a replacement.

None of these are exotic. They are routine components of implant planning, and knowing which one you need is the point of the consultation.

Wisdom Teeth and Surgical Extractions

Third molars are evaluated in the late teens and early twenties, when roots are still forming and recovery tends to be faster. We image, assess position relative to nerve and sinus, and recommend removal only when the findings support it.

Teeth fractured below the gum line, decayed past restoration, or fused to bone require a surgical extraction rather than forceps: a small incision, careful sectioning, and sutures. Handled properly this preserves the bone you will need for whatever replaces the tooth.

Pre-Prosthetic Surgery for Denture Patients

A denture can only fit as well as the ridge underneath it. Bony irregularities, excess soft tissue, and retained roots left behind from old extractions all interfere with seating and stability. Reshaping the ridge before the denture is fabricated makes a substantial difference in how it performs, and it is frequently skipped.

If you have a denture that has never fit properly, the problem may be underneath it rather than in the appliance.
